History of the Human Sciences, Early Career Prize 2020-21

 

 

 

History of the Human Sciences – the international journal of peer-reviewed research, which provides the leading forum for work in the social sciences, humanities, human psychology and biology that reflexively examines its own historical origins and interdisciplinary influences – is delighted to announce details of its prize for early career scholars. The intention of the annual award is to recognise a researcher whose work best represents the journal’s aim to critically examine traditional assumptions and preoccupations about human beings, their societies and their histories in light of developments that cut across disciplinary boundaries. In the pursuit of these goals, History of the Human Sciences publishes traditional humanistic studies as well work in the social sciences, including the fields of sociology, psychology, political science, the history and philosophy of science, anthropology, classical studies, and literary theory. Scholars working in any of these fields are encouraged to apply.

 

 

Guidelines for the Award

 

Scholars who wish to be considered for the award are asked to submit an up-to-date two-page CV (including a statement that confirms eligibility for the award) and an essay that is a maximum of 12,000 words long (including notes and references). The essay should be unpublished and not under consideration elsewhere, based on original research, written in English, and follow History of the Human Science’s style guide. Scholars are advised to read the journal’s description of its aims and scope, as well as its submission guidelines.

 

Entries will be judged by a panel drawn from the journal’s editorial team and board. They will identify the essay that best fits the journal’s aims and scope.

 

 

Eligibility

 

Scholars of any nationality who have either not yet been awarded a PhD or are no more than five years from its award are welcome to apply. The judging panel will use the definition of “active years”, with time away from academia for parental leave, health problems, or other relevant reasons being disregarded in the calculation.

 

 

Prize

 

The winning scholar will be awarded £250 and have their essay published in History of the Human Sciences (subject to the essay passing through the journal’s peer review process). The intention is to award the prize to a single entrant but the judging panel may choose to recognise more than one essay in the event of a particularly strong field.

 

 

Deadlines

 

Entries should be made by Friday 29th January 2021. The panel aims to make a decision by Friday 30th April 2021. The winning entry will be submitted for peer review automatically. The article, clearly identified as the winner of the History of the Human Sciences Early Career Prize, will then be published in the journal as soon as the production schedule allows. The winning scholar and article will also be promoted by History of the Human Sciences, including on its website, which hosts content separate to the journal.

 

 

Previous Winners

 

2019-21’s winner was Danielle Carr (Columbia) for their essay, “Ghastly Marionettes and the political metaphysics of cognitive liberalism: Anti-behaviourism, language, and The Origins of Totalitarianism”. The committee also awarded a special commendation to Katie Joice (Birkbeck) for their essay “Mothering in the Frame: cinematic microanalysis and the pathogenic mother, 1945-67”. [*] Wiktor Sukiennicki (1901-1983) - Urodził się 25 lipca 1901 r. w Aleksocie na Kowieńszczyźnie. Ukończył szkołę średnią w Rybińsku (Rosja), gdzie należał do harcerstwa, a następnie wstąpił do POW w Kownie, brał udział w wojnie 1920 r. służąc w wojsku polskim. W latach 1919-24 odbywał studia prawnicze na restytuowanym Uniwersytecie Stefana Batorego w Wilnie. W Polsce obronił doktorat, poświęcony polityce kolonizacyjnej w zaborze pruskim po 1886 r., zaś na Uniwersytecie Paryskim, w 1925 r., z zakresu prawa międzynarodowego, zdobył doktorat na podstawie rozprawy traktującej o rozwoju teorii suwerenności państwa w Europie nowożytnej; odbył też studia uzupełniające w Wiedniu, Kolonii, Hadze i Rzymie. W latach 1929-1939 prowadził wykłady z teorii prawa na Uniwersytecie Stefana Batorego. Po utworzeniu w Wilnie Instytutu Naukowo-Badawczego Europy Wschodniej (1930) kierował jego Sekcją Prawniczną i wykładał w Szkole Nauk Politycznych przy USB. W 1934 r. odbył podróż naukowo-badawczą do ZSRS. Z zakresu sowietologii opublikował m.in. syntezę Ewolucja ustroju ZSRR (1917-1936) (w druku ukazał się tylko tom pierwszy z trzech projektowanych w 1937 r.) oraz dwa ważne artykuły problemowe: Konstytucja stalinowska a ustrój radziecki (1937) i Marksowsko-leninowska teoria prawa (1934); autor propozycji zmiany pojęcia „sowiecki” na „radziecki” w języku polskim. Po zajęciu Wilna przez ZSRS aresztowany i wywieziony do łagrów sowieckich w rejonie Krasnojarska na Syberii. Po układzie Sikorski-Majski został zwolniony i pełnił funkcję I sekretarza Ambasady RP w Kujbyszewie, a następnie pracował w Ośrodku Studiów Ministerstwa Informacji i Dokumentacji RP na Bliskim Wschodzie. W latach 1945-1947 kierował tzw. polskim Wydziałem Prawa przy Uniwersytecie Oksfordzkim. Od 1959 r. przebywał w Stanford (Kalifornia) pracując w Hoover Institution. Współpracował w Instytutem Literackim J. Giedroycia. Opublikował m.in. Kolektywizacja rolnictwa w ZSRR w okresie pierwszej pięciolatki. Studium prawno-polityczne („Wileński Przegląd Prawniczy”, r. VIII, 10, 1937), Ewolucja ustroju ZSRS 1917-1936 (1937), Pół wieku rewolucji rosyjskiej (1967), East-Central Europe during the First World War (2 tomy, 1988). Pod koniec życia większość sił poświęcił pisaniu nieukończonej pracy o latach I wojny światowej na ziemiach byłego Wielkiego Księstwa Litewskiego i losach narodów Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej. Zmarł 10 kwietnia 1983 r. w Stanford (USA).

Webinar: A. Skolimowska, Corpus of Ioannes Dantiscus’ Texts and Correspondence – opportunities and perspectives. 1 October 2020. Hosted by Centre for the Study of the Reformation

Johannes Dantiscus (1485–1548), a distinguished diplomat at the court of the Jagiellonian Dynasty, bishop of Culm and, subsequently, of Warmia, and an acclaimed author of Neo-Latin poetic compositions, maintained contact with numerous prominent personalities of his times. He corresponded, among many others, with the ‘Prince of the Humanists’, Desiderius Erasmus, the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés, the praeceptor Germaniae Philip Melanchthon, and Nicolaus Copernicus, who formulated the heliocentric model of the Solar System. Dantiscus’s correspondence, of which more than 6100 letters are extant, alongside his other texts, has been researched and systematically published online as part of the project titled Corpus of Ioannes Dantiscus’ Texts and Correspondence and carried out at the University of Warsaw over the past thirty years. The purpose of the lecture will be to present the structure of this digital edition, current possibilities of employing it for academic research, and the perspectives of its development as well as continuance.

Dr hab. Anna Skolimowska teaches at the Faculty of ‘Artes Liberales’, University of Warsaw, where she is the head of the Laboratory for Source Editing & Digital Humanities. Dr hab. Anna Skolimowska specializes in Latin paleography, scientific editing, and the Renaissance Respublica litteraria, mainly in regard to the aspects of its language and literary culture. She supervises editorial and interpretational research on Ioannes Dantiscus' (Jan Dantyszek) vast corpus of letters and literary works.

The seminar Central, Eastern and South Eastern European Histories of Science and the Humanities will take place on Friday, 2 October 2020 between 10am and 6pm. It is hosted jointly by the Department of History and the Department of Contemporary History (University of Vienna) in collaboration with the research initiative (East) European Epistemologies at the Max-Weber-Kolleg for Advanced Cultural and Social Studies, Erfurt. Marian Smoluchowski jest jednym z najczęściej cytowanych polskich naukowców – Web of Science określa liczbę cytowań jego prac w okresie od 1894 do 2014 roku na 7235 (Maria Curie-Skłodowska była w tym czasie cytowana 1582 razy). Regularnie przywoływane są równania dotyczące teorii procesów stochastycznych, a równanie ciągłości Smoluchowskiego stosowane jest w opisach procesów sedymentacji i koagulacji. Jego badania dotyczące ruchów Browna przyczyniły się do triumfu teorii atomistycznej w fizyce. Dzięki ich wykorzystaniu Richard Zsigmondy, Jean Perrin i Theodor Svedberg otrzymali w latach 1925–1926 Nagrody Nobla. Książka przedstawia wkład polskiego fizyka w naukę oraz filozofię, zwłaszcza w filozofię przyrody. Badania Smoluchowskiego dotyczące przyczyny i przypadku doprowadziły do wprowadzenia rachunku prawdopodobieństwa do fizyki. Jego teoria kryterium użyteczności odpowiada na pytania, jak rozwija się nauka i jak weryfikujemy hipotezy oraz teorie. Udowadnia, że użyteczność jest kategorią uniwersalną i odnosi się do wszystkich aspektów funkcjonowania człowieka w świecie przyrody.
