[*] Wiktor Sukiennicki (1901-1983) - Urodził się 25 lipca 1901 r. w Aleksocie na Kowieńszczyźnie. Ukończył szkołę średnią w Rybińsku (Rosja), gdzie należał do harcerstwa, a następnie wstąpił do POW w Kownie, brał udział w wojnie 1920 r. służąc w wojsku polskim. W latach 1919-24 odbywał studia prawnicze na restytuowanym Uniwersytecie Stefana Batorego w Wilnie. W Polsce obronił doktorat, poświęcony polityce kolonizacyjnej w zaborze pruskim po 1886 r., zaś na Uniwersytecie Paryskim, w 1925 r., z zakresu prawa międzynarodowego, zdobył doktorat na podstawie rozprawy traktującej o rozwoju teorii suwerenności państwa w Europie nowożytnej; odbył też studia uzupełniające w Wiedniu, Kolonii, Hadze i Rzymie. W latach 1929-1939 prowadził wykłady z teorii prawa na Uniwersytecie Stefana Batorego. Po utworzeniu w Wilnie Instytutu Naukowo-Badawczego Europy Wschodniej (1930) kierował jego Sekcją Prawniczną i wykładał w Szkole Nauk Politycznych przy USB. W 1934 r. odbył podróż naukowo-badawczą do ZSRS. Z zakresu sowietologii opublikował m.in. syntezę Ewolucja ustroju ZSRR (1917-1936) (w druku ukazał się tylko tom pierwszy z trzech projektowanych w 1937 r.) oraz dwa ważne artykuły problemowe: Konstytucja stalinowska a ustrój radziecki (1937) i Marksowsko-leninowska teoria prawa (1934); autor propozycji zmiany pojęcia „sowiecki” na „radziecki” w języku polskim. Po zajęciu Wilna przez ZSRS aresztowany i wywieziony do łagrów sowieckich w rejonie Krasnojarska na Syberii. Po układzie Sikorski-Majski został zwolniony i pełnił funkcję I sekretarza Ambasady RP w Kujbyszewie, a następnie pracował w Ośrodku Studiów Ministerstwa Informacji i Dokumentacji RP na Bliskim Wschodzie. W latach 1945-1947 kierował tzw. polskim Wydziałem Prawa przy Uniwersytecie Oksfordzkim. Od 1959 r. przebywał w Stanford (Kalifornia) pracując w Hoover Institution. Współpracował w Instytutem Literackim J. Giedroycia. Opublikował m.in. Kolektywizacja rolnictwa w ZSRR w okresie pierwszej pięciolatki. Studium prawno-polityczne („Wileński Przegląd Prawniczy”, r. VIII, 10, 1937), Ewolucja ustroju ZSRS 1917-1936 (1937), Pół wieku rewolucji rosyjskiej (1967), East-Central Europe during the First World War (2 tomy, 1988). Pod koniec życia większość sił poświęcił pisaniu nieukończonej pracy o latach I wojny światowej na ziemiach byłego Wielkiego Księstwa Litewskiego i losach narodów Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej. Zmarł 10 kwietnia 1983 r. w Stanford (USA).

Webinar: A. Skolimowska, Corpus of Ioannes Dantiscus’ Texts and Correspondence – opportunities and perspectives. 1 October 2020. Hosted by Centre for the Study of the Reformation

Johannes Dantiscus (1485–1548), a distinguished diplomat at the court of the Jagiellonian Dynasty, bishop of Culm and, subsequently, of Warmia, and an acclaimed author of Neo-Latin poetic compositions, maintained contact with numerous prominent personalities of his times. He corresponded, among many others, with the ‘Prince of the Humanists’, Desiderius Erasmus, the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés, the praeceptor Germaniae Philip Melanchthon, and Nicolaus Copernicus, who formulated the heliocentric model of the Solar System. Dantiscus’s correspondence, of which more than 6100 letters are extant, alongside his other texts, has been researched and systematically published online as part of the project titled Corpus of Ioannes Dantiscus’ Texts and Correspondence and carried out at the University of Warsaw over the past thirty years. The purpose of the lecture will be to present the structure of this digital edition, current possibilities of employing it for academic research, and the perspectives of its development as well as continuance.

Dr hab. Anna Skolimowska teaches at the Faculty of ‘Artes Liberales’, University of Warsaw, where she is the head of the Laboratory for Source Editing & Digital Humanities. Dr hab. Anna Skolimowska specializes in Latin paleography, scientific editing, and the Renaissance Respublica litteraria, mainly in regard to the aspects of its language and literary culture. She supervises editorial and interpretational research on Ioannes Dantiscus' (Jan Dantyszek) vast corpus of letters and literary works.

Marian Smoluchowski jest jednym z najczęściej cytowanych polskich naukowców – Web of Science określa liczbę cytowań jego prac w okresie od 1894 do 2014 roku na 7235 (Maria Curie-Skłodowska była w tym czasie cytowana 1582 razy). Regularnie przywoływane są równania dotyczące teorii procesów stochastycznych, a równanie ciągłości Smoluchowskiego stosowane jest w opisach procesów sedymentacji i koagulacji. Jego badania dotyczące ruchów Browna przyczyniły się do triumfu teorii atomistycznej w fizyce. Dzięki ich wykorzystaniu Richard Zsigmondy, Jean Perrin i Theodor Svedberg otrzymali w latach 1925–1926 Nagrody Nobla. Książka przedstawia wkład polskiego fizyka w naukę oraz filozofię, zwłaszcza w filozofię przyrody. Badania Smoluchowskiego dotyczące przyczyny i przypadku doprowadziły do wprowadzenia rachunku prawdopodobieństwa do fizyki. Jego teoria kryterium użyteczności odpowiada na pytania, jak rozwija się nauka i jak weryfikujemy hipotezy oraz teorie. Udowadnia, że użyteczność jest kategorią uniwersalną i odnosi się do wszystkich aspektów funkcjonowania człowieka w świecie przyrody. Call for papers: Educational Research and Evaluation, Special issue: Internationalizing Universities and Higher Education Systems: New Players in a Changing Scene

The impact of globalization on higher education is profound and multi-faceted. It affects not only the leading research universities aiming for global ranking, but, indeed, all universities regardless of their status, type and higher education system in which they are situated. Motivations and pathways for internationalization vary and are often correlated with the socio-economic context of their respective society. Much of the internationalization process is regional rather than fully global. Some of the actions are proactive and well-planned, while some universities and higher education systems are in the wake of internationalization tide. The examples here could be the well-structured Bologna Process that facilitates the mobility of students and staff among European Union universities and the bottom-up pattern of intra-Asia student mobilities supported by sub-regional economic integrations, ethnic, religious and post-colonial ties and of emerging universities seeking to enhance their international ‘world class’ status.

While much of the existing research focuses on flagship universities and traditional higher international education market, this Special Issue looks at universities and higher education systems which are new players engaged in internationalization, or existing players facing new challenge(s). For instance, many countries are facing the challenge of low fertility, therefore are looking at international student recruitment to augment their domestic workforce. Commercial universities have been playing an increasing role in higher education during the past decades. Another example is China: new opportunities as well as challenges of internationalization have been brought up by the launch of the Belt and Road Initiatives.

We welcome empirical case studies about internationalizing universities and/or analysis of the higher education systems in which they are located. The topics cover, but are not limited to, the investigation of marketization in and of international higher education, mobilities of students and staff, restructuring of university organization, developing and/or reforming new and existing curricula respectively, and policies for, and policy making on, internationalization. What motivates universities and/or higher education systems to push for internationalization? How are the changing local, regional and global dynamics reshaping the adopted strategies and practices? And what are the implications of internationalization for education and society? The Special Issue aims to demonstrate the diversity of internationalization by collecting papers from different countries and shedding light on the implications of this global phenomenon.

Submission Instructions:

Abstracts for the Special Issue should be between 300 and 500 words and include the names and affiliations of the authors and a provisional title. Please submit abstracts by 31 October, 2020 to the Guest Editor Dr. Rochelle GE: rochelle.ge@usj.edu.mo. Authors will receive notification of whether their abstracts have been accepted, by 30 November, 2020. Final manuscripts are due by 28 February, 2021.

The Educational Research and Evaluation is a fully refereed international journal publishing original academic articles that promote educational processes and outcomes that are both well-informed and evidence-based. The journal is deliberately multi-disciplinary and broad in its scope, and addresses rigorous research and evaluation at all levels, and in all sectors and ages of education. The journal publishes papers which report results of: original research and evaluation studies; secondary analyses of existing (international) data sets; meta-analyses and reviews synthesizing evidence and guidelines for practice. Книга посвящена жизни и научному творчеству историка Ивана Павловича Козловского (1869–1942). Долгое время его имя было известно лишь специалистам благодаря книге «Первые почты и первые почтмейстеры в Московском государстве» (1913), а также статьям о соратнике Петра I Виниусе. Однако научное творчество И.П. Козловского значительно шире, о чем можно судить по публикуемой в издании библиографии его работ. Важную роль Козловский сыграл в эвакуации Варшавского университета, профессором которого являлся, на юг России в 1915 г.; он много сделал для становления университета в Ростове-на-Дону, для организации архивного дела на Дону в 1920-е годы. Судьба историка, чье мировоззрение сформировалось задолго до революции 1917 г., сложилась драматично. Признанный политически неблагонадежным, он был арестован в 1931 г., лишился работы, был сослан в Мичуринск. К полноценной преподавательской работе он смог вернуться только в Уральском педагогическом институте в 1940 г. Второе издание биографии И.П. Козловского содержит вступительную статью его внучек А.Н. и Л.Н. Ильиных, некоторые впервые публикуемые рукописи историка, многочисленные фотографии из семейного архива.

F. Herza sleduje kulturu vystavování kuriozit v celé šíři jejích nejrůznějších projevů a podob od konce osmnáctého století až po období meziválečného Československa. "Designing Hygiea" (Benjamin Ward Richardson, 1876). Architecture, Urbanism, and the Sanitized City in 19th-century Central Europe

In the course of Vienna‘s emergence as a modern metropolis in the second half of the 19th century, critical questions regarding the health and hygienic living conditions of its inhabitants became more widely known to experts as well as to a broader public. Influenced by progress in the natural sciences and medicine, and particularly by the “Viennese Medical School”, the fields of medicine, architecture and urban planning intersected at this time in Vienna. Up until now, the main focus of work in the history of science has been on the training and development of expert medical knowledge after the Josephinian reforms of the Enlightenment, and references to architecture and urban planning have been infrequent. On the other hand, work in the history of 19th century architecture only rarely addresses medical issues, or the influence of medical developments on architectural design. Nevertheless, the problem of “healthy” or “hygienic” space was linked to urban planning and architectural considerations at an early point. For example, the doctor Carl Böhm developed a remarkable ventilation system for the Court Opera, whose principle was adopted by many public buildings on the Ringstrasse. Similarly, issues of health and hygiene influenced the building regulations of 1868, as well as Eugen Faßbender‘s regulatory plan for Vienna from 1893. While in Vienna living in the suburbs or the countryside during the summer had been firmly established since the 18th century, the subsequent expansion of the city due to industrialisation and population growth led to new forms of health oriented accommodation outside the city (the “Sommerfrische” [summer resort]). Certain regions such as the Semmering or the Wienerwald were structured and architecturally designed as “health landscapes,” and consumed as such through the media. On the one hand, these places marked a move outward from the city, but on the other they were closely interwoven with it (eg., the users, architects and operators of the sanatoriums in Purkersdorf or Pernitz [Sanatorium Wienerwald]), and so also had an inward effect on Viennese discussions about health and hygiene. There was then, a reciprocal relationship between the urban representation and use of architecture, and ideas of hygiene that emerged in the countryside around Vienna. In addition, these health spots in and around Vienna utilised various architectural modes depending on their target audience, and were employed in different ways depending on the social class of their guests.

In addition to discussing concrete architectural manifestations of ideas about hygiene such as sanatoriums, hospital buildings, mental asylums, baths, etc., we will also discuss the spatial and regional context in and around Vienna in which a topography of health developed (river baths in the Danube wetlands, Kursalon on the Glacis, hospital facilities on the slopes of the Vienna Woods, etc.). Since these places have often been transformed and are no longer perceptible, the workshop will also contribute to an archaeology of ideas of health and hygiene in 19th century Vienna. The workshop will discuss both the complex relationship between the built environment and ideas of hygiene in the second half of the 19th century and its methodology. While Vienna and Austria are the focus of the workshop, they will be contextualised by international perspectives on other cities.

Русский писатель предстает профессиональным переводчиком, приобщившим русского читателя к шедеврам мировой литературы. Выявляется использование переводных материалов в авторских журналах ("Московский журнал", впоследствии — "Вестник Европы"). In Inventing the Social in Romania, 1848–1914, Călin Cotoi brings to life several ‘obscure’ anarchists, physicians, public hygienists and reformers roaming the borderlands of Europe and Russia. 

The book follows individuals, texts, projects, sometimes even bacteria, traveling, meeting, colliding, writing and talking to each other in surprising places, and on changing topics. All of them navigated the land, sometimes finding unexpected loopholes and shortcuts in it, and emerged in different and unexpected parts of the social, political or geographical space. 

Using materials ranging from anarchists’ letters, to social-theoretical debates and medical treatises, Călin Cotoi points to the larger theoretical and historical issues involved in the local creation of the social, its historicity, and its representability.

Călin Cotoi (Calin Cotoi)  is Professor at University of Bucharest, Department of Sociology. He has published monographs and articles on the history of social sciences, history of medicine, political anthropology, and social theory.

Poletayev Readings 9¾: The Corridors of Theory. OCTOBER 2, 2020; ONLINE

Poletayev Readings is an annual conference of the Institute for Theoretical and Historical Studies in the Humanities dedicated to the memory of the Institute's founder Andrey Poletaev.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

The Poletaev Readings in 2020 are the most unusual (almost magical) in their entire ten-year history: the event will happen in many places around the world at once, yet it will still take place at IGITI. Our previous conference was devoted to the historical imagination of late socialism, and the Tenth Poletaev Readings, now postponed to 2021, will focus on future theoretical horizons in the Humanities.

The obvious circumstances beyond our control that determined the new format of the Poletaev Readings 9¾ are the best reason to turn to the actual present. The innovations and changes that have already occurred in the humanities and social theory in the new millennium will be the subject of our discussion. We invite the speakers and opponents to present one or several key changes of recent years, without which, in their opinion, the theoretical agenda in their field is already inconceivable. These topics then will be discussed in a round table format – for, luckily, we need no visas or flight tickets, only web links.
