 Dana Hašková: Ruská bílá emigrace v Československu: Představitelé technických, přírodních a zemědělských věd [Russian White Emigration in Czechoslovakia: Representatives of Technical, Natural and Agricultural Sciences]. Praha: Academia, Slovanský ústav 2026. ISBN: 978-80-200-3697-1

Po revoluci v roce 1917 a následné občanské válce emigrovaly z území bývalé Ruské říše statisíce lidí. Přibližně třicet tisíc žilo i v meziválečném Československu.

Zvláštní skupinu této emigrace tvořila ruská vědecká a kulturní elita. V Československu tak působily stovky profesorů, pracovníků vysokých škol a vědců z nejrůznějších oborů.

Své odborné práce emigranti vydávali v českém i slovenském jazyce, publikovali v českém a slovenském periodickém tisku a zapojovali se do zdejšího vědeckého života. Badatelé věnující se tématu ruské emigrace se dosud zaměřovali především na představitele humanitních či uměleckých oborů. Činnost představitelů technických, přírodních a zemědělských věd zatím není podrobněji zdokumentována. V populárně-naučných publikacích a odborných článcích jsou zmiňováni pouze jednotlivci v souvislosti s výsledky své práce. Monografie Ruská bílá emigrace v Československu je tak prvním pokusem zmapovat činnost těchto techniků a přírodovědců během jejich pobytu v Československu. Uplatnili se zde jako pedagogové, v praxi i ve výzkumu a ve svých oborech mnohdy patřili ke špičkovým odborníkům. Předkládaná publikace z velké části vychází z dobového tisku, nekrologů, archivních materiálů, rodinných archivů a databáze udělených patentů. Citované dokumenty rovněž podávají svědectví o životě v emigraci a těžkostech, s nimiž se emigranti museli v běžném životě vyrovnávat.

More than 300 river basins cross international borders, providing freshwater, energy, transportation, food, and ecosystem services for billions of people. Yet transboundary rivers are far more than shared natural resources. They are political, technological, legal, ecological, and diplomatic spaces where states, engineers, scientists, international organizations, and local communities have negotiated competing visions of development, sovereignty, environmental protection, and cooperation.

Although transboundary rivers have attracted growing scholarly attention, research remains fragmented across disciplines. Environmental historians have explored changing human–river relationships; historians of technology have examined hydraulic engineering and infrastructure; historical geographers have analysed river landscapes and territorial change; scholars of Science and Technology Studies (STS) have investigated expertise and knowledge production; political scientists and scholars of international relations have focused on water diplomacy and international institutions; legal scholars have examined international water law; while hydrologists and water-governance researchers have developed sophisticated frameworks for understanding river basin management. Yet these conversations often do not intersect.

This workshop starts from the premise that understanding transboundary rivers requires genuine interdisciplinary dialogue. Rather than treating rivers simply as environmental systems or geopolitical boundaries, we invite participants to explore them as dynamic socio-environmental systems shaped simultaneously by ecology, infrastructure, science, law, diplomacy, economics, and politics.

Building upon the Czech Science Foundation (GAČR) project An Environmental History of Transboundary Rivers in Cold War East-Central Europe, the workshop seeks to expand regional scholarship into a broader comparative and global conversation. It aims to establish an international interdisciplinary network dedicated to the historical study of transboundary rivers and to identify new directions for collaborative research at the intersection of environmental history, history of technology, geography, international law, political science, STS, and water governance.

Format:

The workshop will be held in online format.

Rather than focusing exclusively on completed research, we particularly encourage proposals presenting original archival research, conceptual interventions, comparative perspectives, methodological reflections, and work in progress.

The workshop is designed to maximize discussion and exchange across disciplines. Each paper will receive substantial time for discussion, and the programme will conclude with a roundtable on future directions in the interdisciplinary study of transboundary rivers.

The Bohemian Reformation — the reformation before the Reformation — offered a radical solution to the spiritual and institutional crisis of the late medieval church at the end of the fourteenth century. The beginnings of this reform are distinctly connected with Prague University, which drew many educated people to Prague from across Europe. Through Jan Hus — a former Prague University student who became its rector in 1409/1410 — the Bohemian Reformation gave rise to a new, radical ecclesiology. Not only did Hus challenge the hierarchical system of the church, but under his influence, the Bohemian Reformation acquired a specific national shape, and elements of Czech messianism emerged with the university.

The book Prague, Jan Hus and Prague University analyzes these processes within Prague University, as well as its limits and restrictive consequences for the Bohemian Reformation and Czech medieval society. Emphasis is placed on showing how Prague and the university became a world that successfully struggled for its own existence in late medieval Christian Europe.

Das Buch befasst sich mit den Beziehungen zwischen der Universität Basel und den böhmischen Ländern im Zeitraum von 1460 bis 1630. Untersucht werden die Struktur und die grundlegenden Entwicklungstendenzen der Universität, ihre Frequentierung durch die Bewohner der böhmischen Länder, ihre soziale und konfessionelle Zusammensetzung, ihr Bildungsprofil und die weiteren Laufbahnen der Studierenden.

Kolektivní monografie představuje první systematicky pojatou analýzu vývoje zdravotnické záchranné služby v českých zemích v období od jejího zestátnění v roce 1952 až po transformaci v krajské příspěvkové organizace v roce 2003. Kniha si klade za cíl zmapovat procesy institucionalizace, profesionalizace a modernizace přednemocniční neodkladné péče prostřednictvím analýzy oficiálního diskurzu a aktérské reflexe. Těžiště výkladu spočívá v letech 1952–2003, zároveň je však tento vývoj zasazen do širší perspektivy „dlouhého trvání“ od konce 18. století s důrazem na klíčové mezníky druhé poloviny 20. a počátku 21. století (1952, 1974, 1992 a 2003). V tematických kapitolách se monografie věnuje socio‑profesní identitě výjezdových skupin, technologickým a materiálním proměnám, přechodovým liniím mezi přednemocniční a nemocniční péčí, etickým dilematům spojeným se setkáváním se smrtí a také genderovým aspektům a popkulturním obrazům. Zvláštní pozornost je věnována paměťové perspektivě řidičů, sester a lékařů, jejichž vyprávění slouží jako pramen k porozumění transformačním procesům nejen v urgentní medicíně, ale i v širším fungování socialistického a postsocialistického zdravotnictví.

Konference si klade za cíl přispět k hlubšímu porozumění tomu, jak historické vědy – historie, archeologie, pomocné vědy historické, dějiny umění – reagovaly na zásadní politické a společenské proměny spojené s první světovou válkou, rozpadem habsburské monarchie a vznikem samostatné Československé republiky.

 

Vítány jsou zejména příspěvky, které se věnují otázce, jak tyto převratné děje ovlivňovaly praktickou práci badatelů a badatelek, jejich profesní identitu i vnímání smyslu vlastního oboru. Současně konference nabízí prostor pro širší reflexi otázky, zda a případně jakou roli sehráli představitelé historických věd v procesu zániku Rakouska-Uherska a při zakládání a legitimizaci Československé republiky. Pozornost může být věnována i tomu, jak soudobé politické a společenské okolnosti ovlivňovaly témata, metodologii, teoretická východiska a paradigmata historickovědních disciplín, a jaké měly vliv na institucionální zázemí jednotlivých oborů.

Publikace přináší v promyšleném výběru zajímavou a čtenářsky přívětivě uchopenou perspektivu nahlížející na vědecký svět jako prostor, kde se věda a hudba mohou přirozeně potkávat, prolínat a vzájemně obohacovat. První ze dvou hlavních částí knihy pojednává o vztazích mezi vědou a hudbou, o postavení hudby a hudební nauky v systému věd a o vazbách a možná až překvapivých souvislostech mezi hudbou a jednotlivými vědními disciplínami (biologií, lékařskou vědou, chemií, matematikou, fyzikou, astronomií, jazykovědou a filozofií). Druhá část představuje životní osudy třinácti českých vědců, příslušníků cca dvou až tří po sobě jdoucích generací, jimž byla společná pozoruhodná všestrannost napříč různými sférami lidské činnosti. Mimořádně vynikali nejen ve svém hlavním vědním oboru, ale i mnohostranným interdisciplinárním přesahem, a to na domácí i mezinárodní úrovni. Mimoto však byli rovněž výbornými, zpravidla celoživotně aktivními hudebníky a ve své době dokázali udávat směr i svými příkladnými hodnotovými měřítky a smyslem pro společenskou soudržnost.

This open access book tells the history of the International Union of Students, providing a fascinating account of a significant but understudied vehicle of internationalism amidst the Global Cold War. Focusing on three main themes; student internationalism, decolonization, and socialist transnationalism, it draws on a vast array of archival sources to explore cooperation and exchange between the Cold war's three worlds, and the role of the organization in developing global socialism.

Centring Prague as a key co-ordinating centre of Cold War internationalisms and with an international focus on student organisations, Pešta contextualises the legacy and impact of student internationalism in the twentieth century. Paying particular attention to the role of 'Third World' delegates who communicated and legitimised topics such as colonialism, racism, global inequality and national liberation, it shows how the language and agenda of the IUS changed over time, and how the organization struggled to find its place after the end of the Cold War in 1989.

Kniha zkoumá přístupy psychiatrů a psychologů k násilnému chování a kriminalitě ve třech odlišných společnostech - v komunistickém Československu, západním Německu a Velké Británii v letech 1945-1970. Prostřednictvím rozboru soudně odborného vědění a psychiatrických posudků sleduje, jak se do hodnocení lidského chování a vymezování hranic trestní odpovědnosti promítaly válečné zkušenosti, dobová mentalita, společenské postavení či etnicita. Srovnání napříč železnou oponou odhaluje nejen rozdíly, ale i sdílené naděje vkládané do vědy jako nástroje utváření člověka a společnosti.

Abstract:

The BOAR project is an anthropological study of veterinary knowledge and practice beyond animal

health, examining how veterinary science increasingly mediates human-wildlife interactions, and serves

to structure and govern society through biosecurity measures. More specifically, the project focuses on

how recreational hunting communities, self-appointed stewards of wild boar, are becoming key subjects

for veterinary interventions.

The RESOURCE project turns the usual logic of reasoning about the use of resources upside down.

Instead of investigating the wasteful and destructive forms of consumer life, it aims at frugal practices in

Czech and Dutch households. The research focuses on the management of two key household

resources: food and water.

Kniha poukazuje na klíčovou roli lokálních aktérů, na kontinuitu vývoje před rokem 1989 a po něm i na důvody, proč se intenzivní spolupráce počátku 90. let nerozvinula v trvalé propojení regionů. Rozšiřuje transnacionální dějiny pozdního socialismu a transformace o regionální a environmentální perspektivu.

Metaphors in science, philosophy, and the arts are fundamental to the history of thought, serving not only to simplify complex matters but also to foster invention, speculation, and theory. Among other functions, they played an important role in the emergence of modern ideas of the encyclopaedia and encyclopaedism, thereby contributing to programs of universal knowledge, general education, and, more recently, open science. While conceptual history is widely recognised as crucial and has been thoroughly studied, the history of metaphors has so far remained in the background. This publication aims to bring it to the forefront.

Tato kritická studie dokládá na základě konkrétních dobových příkladů, že pojem „zneužívání psychiatrie“ je třeba definovat a pojímat v širším slova smyslu, a to zejména z hlediska jeho realizace v rámci totalitárního systému. Zároveň je i historickým příspěvkem k problému vyrovnání se s minulostí.

Dosavadní úzké chápání pojmu redukuje problém pouze na zneužívání odborných lékařských znalostí či tzv. „chybných diagnóz“, terapeutických postupů, účelových teorií a využívání lékařů-psychiatrů, kteří se stávali nástroji perzekuce vůči oponentům režimu. To ale nepostihuje a zejména nevysvětluje komplexně historický problém zneužívání československé psychiatrie v soft-sovětském stylu v letech 1948–1989, včetně otázky, proč se i někteří přední psychiatři stávali agenty Státní bezpečnosti a někteří z nich byli přímo řízeni sovětskou tajnou službou KGB.

CfP “The Long Bohemian Reformation, European Universities, and Scholarly Disputations.”

 CfP for the XV International Symposium on the Bohemian Reformation and Religious Practice: “The Long Bohemian Reformation, European Universities, and Scholarly Disputations.” Prague, 18–19 June 2026,  deadline January 31, 2026.

From the 14th century onward, European universities increasingly became key players in ecclesiastical reform. Academically trained scholars participated in Church councils, shaped theological discourse, and often played central roles in reformist movements. The Bohemian Reformation was deeply embedded in this academic environment—including Jan Hus and Jerome of Prague and later generations within the Unity of the Brethren and the Comenian circle.

For many key figures of the Bohemian Reformation, academic disputation – and the broader tradition of learned argumentation – was central to their intellectual activity. Its influence extended not only beyond the university setting – as in the debates on the Four Articles of Prague at the Council of Basel – but also beyond the Bohemian Reformation itself, as exemplified by the Leipzig Disputation and the Marburg Colloquy.

The symposium aims to investigate the intersections between the Bohemian Reformation and academic institutions, encompassing also its subsequent receptions. Particular emphasis will be placed on the role of scholarly disputations and intellectual traditions that contributed to the shaping of reformist thought.

The symposium’s broad scope accommodates both papers focused directly on the Bohemian Reformation as well as contributions in which the Bohemian Reformation forms one part of a larger mosaic.

Suggested topics include but are not limited to:

- Disputations concerning ecclesiastical, reformist, and religious issues related to the Long Bohemian Reformation

- Academic controversies, arguments, and rhetoric surrounding the Long Bohemian Reformation

- Underexplored or little-known textual sources of university and gymnasium origin related to the Long Bohemian Reformation

- Comparative analysis of surviving university and gymnasium manuscripts and prints related to the Long Bohemian Reformation with those from German, French, or British contexts

- Academic texts as sources for writings by reformist figures

- Negative stances toward universities and gymnasia in the writings of representatives of the Long Bohemian Reformation

- The role and manifestations of disputation in promoting reformist ideas within the Bohemian context

- Links of specific universities, academies, gymnasia, and gymnasia illustria to the Bohemian Long Reformation

- The impact of curriculum developments on the Bohemian Reformation (e.g. the influence of Melanchthon’s educational reforms via members of the Unity of the Brethren and Bohemian Protestants who studied in Wittenberg or Geneva)

- The significance of academic education among reformist figures

- Reception of the Bohemian Reformation at universities in the 19th and 20th centuries

- Links between the (Prague) university reform/reformers and other late medieval and early modern reform movements (e.g., monastic movements, lay reform).

Kniha přibližuje fotografickou činnost geografa a cestovatele Jiřího V. Daneše (1880–1928) v letech 1920–1923 v Oceánii, Tichomoří a Severní Americe. Nejprve zdokumentoval cestu do Austrálie, kam se v roce 1920 vydal se svou ženou převzít úřad československého konzula. Další snímky vznikly během jeho pobytu v Austrálii a při výpravách na okolní ostrovy. Fotoaparátem pak zachytil také cestu zpět do vlasti přes tichomořské ostrovy, Japonsko a Kanadu.

Druhou část příběhu Danešových fotografií tvoří jejich osud po roce 2002, kdy byl tento celek poškozen povodní. Skrze fotografie a Danešův cestopis autoři rekonstruují jeho pohled na navštívené země, domorodé kultury či exotickou přírodu. Fotografický deník reflektuje i dobové důsledky migrace, kolonialismu, masové turistiky, ale i důsledky první světové války. Díky digitalizaci a za pomoci restaurátorek tak autoři vdechli fotografiím druhý život.
