Thanks to his experiments on pea plants, first published in 1866, Gregor Mendel is routinely hailed as the founding father of modern genetics. But was it really his intention to uncover the laws of heredity and the particulate nature of the gene – or have these motivations been retrospectively ascribed to him in the light of present-day knowledge? Such questions have been the subject of a long standing debate amongst historians of science, central to which has been the translation of Mendel's original paper into English. Accompanied by an extensive commentary, this new translation, published by the Mendel Museum and supported by the British Society for the History of Science, hopes to bring valuable and important new insights to the ongoing task of understanding Mendel.

This volume explores the intersection between Translation Studies and History and Philosophy of Science to shed light on the workings of scientific communities, the dissemination of knowledge across languages and cultures, and the transformation in the process of that knowledge and of the scientific communities involved, among other issues. Through a diachronic approach, from some chapters focussing on early modernity to others that explore the final decades of the twentieth century, and by considering myriad languages, from Latin to Hindi, the twelve chapters of this volume reflect specifically on: (A) processes of the construction and dissemination of knowledge through the work of specific agents (whether individuals or collectives); (B) the implementation of particular linguistic strategies and visual tools in the translation of knowledge and in the diffusion of translated knowledge; and (C) the role of institutions and governments in the devising and implementation of translation policies, as well as the impact of these.

“Идеализм в философии советского времени: сопротивляясь идеологии”,

который состоится онлайн 30 октября в 18:00 (по московскому времени).

Мы предлагаем пересмотреть значение идеализма как теоретического ресурса советской интеллектуальной культуры. Как система убеждений диалектический материализм в советское время стал дисциплинированно фиксированной и трансмиссивной формой мировоззрения. Он был противопоставлен идеализму как теории, существовавшей в изоляции от практики и/или замаскированной вредной практики. Но даже убеждённые диалектики, такие как историк и философ математики Софья Яновская или философ Эвальд Ильенков, искали способ сохранить идеализм, даже как ошибочную и ограниченную форму мысли.

Webinar: What Was Semashko and What Comes Next? Legacy and Innovation in Ukraine's National Healthcare Reforms

Ukraine has recently undertaken what are arguably the most ambitious health care reforms that Europe has seen in decades. These reforms create opportunities for the implementation of enormously impactful public health and healthcare strategies, but they must also contend with the legacies of Ukraine’s Soviet and early independent eras, both of which have shaped the habits and habitus of healthcare in Ukraine for generations. Carroll will unpack these recent reforms and share, based on her fieldwork, how ordinary Ukrainians are adopting, resisting, and circumventing the impacts of these remarkable changes.

Jennifer J. Carroll is a medical anthropologist, research scientist, and subject matter expert on substance use and public health. Her first book, Narkomania: Drugs, HIV, and Citizenship in Ukraine (Cornell, 2019), is an ethnographic study of internationally-funded treatment programs for opioid use disorder in Ukraine and the roles played by social imaginations of people who use drugs on Ukraine’s ongoing geopolitical conflict and war with Russia.

Afrika se dlouhodobě nachází na okraji zájmu médií i domácího vědeckého bádání. Často se zdůvodněním, že Československo nemělo na kontinentě své kolonie, a proto ho k Africe nepoutají žádné významnější vazby. Studie a rozhovory v aktuálním čísle revue Paměť a dějiny však ukazují, že naše země udržovala s řadou afrických států intenzivní vztahy, a to jak se záměrem vyvážet do Afriky socialismus sovětského typu, tak za účelem usnadnění přístupu k nedostatkovým západním měnám. Tematické číslo Paměti a dějin vychází k šedesátému výročí „roku Afriky“ (1960) a věnuje se široké škále kontaktů mezi Československem a africkými zeměmi v období studené války. Právě před šedesáti lety získalo na africkém kontinentě osmnáct států nezávislost na evropských impériích.

Utility (pol’za) was a watchword of Empress Elizabeth’s reign (1741-61). The 1745 Atlas of the Russian Empire, published in nineteen regional maps and a general map of the empire, was presented in this spirit. The atlas united “geographical rules” and “new observations” to create a complete picture of the All-Russian Empire and contiguous lands. The visual and the imperial intersect in two important ways in the crafting of the Atlas. First, scientific visualization by specialists trained in geography and astronomy, equipped with new instruments and fanning out to remote regions on government-financed expeditions, created the data to be recorded. The relatively new capital of St. Petersburg became the point of reference for mapping the empire. Second, actually drafting the maps on paper was an important moment of imperial representation. What landmarks did the cartographers choose to include? Which geographical features were given priority? How did they picture complicated borders, such as the steppe on the north shore of the Black Sea? This presentation was composed as a short essay for the volume by Valerie Kivelson and Joan Neuberger, Picturing Russian Empire. Professor Evtuhov will expand it into a chapter of her own project in progress, Russia in the Age of Elizabeth (1741-61).

Catherine Evtuhov is a Professor of History at Columbia University. Before that, she taught in the History Department at Georgetown University from 1992 to 2016. Her books include Portrait of a Russian Province: Economy, Society, and Civilization in 19th-Century Nizhnii Novgorod (Pittsburgh UP, 2011), the co-authored A History of Russia: Peoples, Legends, Events, Forces (Houghton-Mifflin Co., 2003; recently translated into Turkish), and The Cross & the Sickle: Sergei Bulgakov and the Fate of Russian Religious Philosophy, 1890-1920 (Cornell UP, 1997).

This event will be held virtually as a Zoom meeting.
