O Polesiu na ogół pisano tak, jakby niczym nie różniło się od innych krain. A przecież wszystko tam wyglądało inaczej – siano zbierano, stojąc po kolana w błocie, na pińskim targu handlowano wprost z łodzi, a centralna część Polesia na kilka miesięcy w roku zamieniała się w śródlądowe morze. Sławomir Łotysz podjął próbę przepisania międzywojennej historii tej krainy, za punkt wyjścia przyjmując wszechobecne tam mokradła. Plany ich osuszenia były w tym okresie, jak dowodzi, głównym elementem polityki państwa wobec ziem wschodnich, bowiem dopiero odwodnienie Polesia otwierało drogę do jego kolonizacji. Przedstawiając dzieje Polesia z perspektywy środowiskowej, w Pińskich błotach autor skłania do refleksji nad stosunkiem człowieka do mokradeł w ogóle. Dziś wiemy, że tereny te, które jeszcze do niedawna uważano za nieużytki, skutecznie magazynują gazy cieplarniane. Co więcej, regulują one także przepływ wody w systemach hydrologicznych i zapewniają schronienie bogatym zbiorowiskom roślinnym i zwierzęcym, dlatego naszym wspólnym obowiązkiem powinna stać się troska nie tylko o zachowanie mokradeł, ale wręcz o ich przywracanie.
Książka Pińskie błota jest pierwszą monografią z dziejów II RP pisaną świadomie z perspektywy środowiskowej, pokazującą ekologiczny wymiar kluczowych debat o tym etapie polskiej historii.

Pripet Marshes are the largest European wetlands extending from the Bug River in the west to the Dnieper River in the east. While today most of this area belongs to Belarus, in the interwar period the marshes were divided in half between Poland and the Soviet Union. The unique natural features of the region, such as regular flooding, moors, swamps, and sand dunes, not only defined its landscape, but also defined its history in a meaningful way. Keeping this last hypothesis in mind, the Pripet Marshes. Nature, knowledge, and politics in Polish Polesie until 1945 (published in Polish, Krakow: Universitas 2022), offers a new perspective on the history of the eastern territories of the Second Polish Republic, known as borderlands. While explaining the position of the planned draining of the Pripet wetlands in a modernist discourse of the interwar period, the book argues that the draining scheme, envisioned in the early 1930s, was the key to ensuring the political, economic, and cultural supremacy of ethnic Poles in the borderlands.
As the first environmental history of Polesie, the book explores the different tangles between man and nature that have shaped the past of this region. Firstly, it demystifies the indigenous economy that prevailed in there until the 1930s as being nature friendly. Secondly, it rebuilds the interwar debate on the expected impact of drainage that the Polish authorities had envisioned but never realized. And thirdly, it describes the results of the drainage work done by the Soviets after 1945, when the whole of the Pripet Marshes became part of the Soviet Union.
Bio
Sławomir Łotysz is a Professor at the Institute for the History of Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw, Poland. His research interests include history of technology, disability studies, environmental history, and health diplomacy.

In 2017-21, he was the President of the International Committee for the History of Technology.

The book presents a history of the Department of English and American studies at Masaryk University (Faculty of Arts) in Brno. The narrative is based on the methodology of “oral history”. The narrator is Don Sparling, long associated with the department and a former Head. The first chapter covers the foundation by Professor František Chudoba in 1920 and the interwar period. The following chapters deal with three periods: 1945 to 1977 (Don Sparling's arrival in the department); 1977–1989; and the subsequent period down to 2000. The last chapter sums up the history of an important part of life at the department, the Gypsywood Players theatre group.

The virtual platform HPS.CESEE and HIRA: Herder Institute Research Academy are proud to present the global book talk "Ukrainian Science Between Two Empires". Fabian Baumann (Chicago) joined with the author of Nationale Wissenschaft zwischen zwei Imperien: Die Ševčenko-Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften, 1892–1918 (Göttingen 2022), Martin Rohde (Prague), to discuss his recently published book, in a discussion moderated by Tatsiana Astrouskaya (Marburg) and Jan Surman (Prague). It is part of a series of open zoom events aiming to foster the discussion of new books and approaches within the history of science and scholarship (broadly understood) in Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe.
Fabian Baumann is a visiting postdoctoral fellow at the University of Chicago and holder of a Postdoc.Mobility grant from the Swiss National Science Foundation. He is currently preparing his first book manuscript, provisionally titled Diverging Paths: An Intimate History of Russian and Ukrainian Nationalisms in Late Imperial Kiev.
Martin Rohde is Schrödinger Fellow of the FWF at the Institute of History, Czech Academy of Sciences. with a project entitled Transregional Region-Making in the Eastern Carpathians. Ukrainian Knowledge Production and its Challenges, 1921–1939. His research interests include Imperial history, transnational and transregional entanglements, history of knowledge and science, spatial perception, history of eugenics and racism, historical memory Regional focus: Habsburg Empire, Ukraine, Russian Empire, Soviet Union, Poland, ČSR.

Research theme within the Visegrad Scholarships at OSA in 2022/23
Lessons of the Cold War?
In the context of the current invasion of Ukraine and the ongoing tragic war, many analysts have claimed that we face the real end of (or the confirmation) of the Cold War and its dichotomies. What we witness would be the outright confrontation between civic liberalism and autocracy, or the “West” and the “East”. According to Stephen Kotkin, even if post-communist societies have changed, a military-police dictatorship in some former satellite countries is still fighting a “West” seen as an enemy, and this has the reverse consolidating effect on the West which re-emerged and stood up against Putin.
We invite historians, researchers, political scientists, sociologists, and socially engaged artists to reflect on the Lessons from the Cold War by taking cues from the Blinken OSA collections. The applicants are encouraged to reflect on the connections as well as on the differences between current times and the past by following some recommended sub-topics listed below.
The importance of homegrown dissident cultures of truth telling and the related counterpropaganda in minimizing them as foreign agents.
Histories of Soviet invasions (1956, 1968, 1979), their stakes, misunderstandings, and miscalculations.
The political instrumentalization and hollowing of concepts, such as “fascism”, “Nazism,” and “imperialism”.
The demonizing methods of propaganda (as not just an alternative regime of facts, but as a stigmatizing tool).
The power of stories: revisionist and public usages of history for political ends.
The relationship between foreign policy, strategic security, and energy relations (at global scale, too).
Lessons from the international security crises (Berlin in 1961, Cuba in 1962, the Sino Soviet split).
Informational asymmetries (cultures of secrecy and obscure decision-making versus cultures of openness and liberalism).
Histories and efficacy of human rights advocacy with regards to abusive regimes.
Post-'89 transitions and their connections to the Cold War (reproduction of secret police networks and the new oligarchies, different understandings of the role of State, the subordination of the legal system, etc.).
Conditions for the maintenance/ disruptions of autocratic regimes (the role of ideology, political patronage, corruption, etc.).
Retroactive assessment of international responses to political and security crises: the role of appeasement, of “stability”.
People on the move: internal displacement and forced migration following Soviet invasions during communism and the dissolution of countries (USSR, YU, Czechoslovakia) in its aftermath.
OSA collections and research tips
The archival collection and research papers of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty constitute the most comprehensive Cold War and post-Cold War archive about the problems of Communism and its aftermath in the early years of post-socialist and post-communist transition. The collection offers important tips both about facts as well as about their conceptualizations from 1949 to 1994. Scholars particularly interested in the former Soviet Union as well as in the aftermath of its dissolution can find relevant the rich collection of sub-fonds Soviet Red Archives, Samizdat Archives, and the Soviet Research Department of the RFE/RL Research Institute (to be compared with the RFE/ RL Russian broadcast recordings). These sub-fonds and series allowed the radios to extract reliable data from the massive body of media produced by the Soviet republics; the Western Press Archives contain the Western representations about the phenomena in the communist bloc and beyond it, about the transition in the 1990s. This archival collection also holds several series of biographical files about major historical figures, dissidents, leaders of national minorities, and those persecuted by the political regimes of that time.
We also suggest many other possible archival collections to be investigated, such as the records of Index on Censorship, the Soviet Propaganda Film collection, the records related to the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, the documents of the Constitutional and Legal Policy Institute, the records of the Forced Migration projects at the Open Society Institute, the records of the International Human Rights Law Institute relating to the conflict in the former Yugoslavia, the records of the American Refugee Committee Balkan’s Programs, the Gary Filerman Collection on Hungarian Refugees from 1956, etc.
OSA research program
The current call is part of a reflexive-research program at OSA interested in connecting past issues related to oppressive regimes, censorship, violence and information manipulation to current phenomena. We would like to assess the potential of a genealogical project linking the contemporary epistemic and political crisis of democracy to past modes of inquiry and activism.
Admission
We seek to promote exchanges among people with backgrounds in the arts, humanities and social sciences in the way they think through and about archives while being concerned with current problems. From this point of view, the invitation is not only addressed to scholars working specifically on Cold War topics, but to all those interested in theories of knowledge, who would use OSA documents as props for larger reflections and activist concerns.
Fellowship requirements and OSA support
While working on their own subject, fellows will have the opportunity to collaborate with OSA researchers and to transform their archival investigation into a full research experience. The fellows are invited to give a final presentation about their research findings at OSA and the ways in which the documents were relevant to their research. The presentations are organized within the Visegrad Scholarship at OSA lecture series and as such are open for the general public.
OSA academic and archival staff will assist the fellows in their investigations, facilitate contact with the CEU community, and grant access to the CEU library. Besides its archival analogue collections, OSA can also offer access to unique, audio-visual materials related to documentary practices, a special collection of RFE (anti)propaganda books and a growing collection on digital humanities, human rights, archival theory and philosophy.
About the Fellowship
The twenty grants of 2.700 euro each are designed to provide access to the archives for scholars, artists, and journalists, and to cover travel to and from Budapest, a modest subsistence, and accommodation for a research period of eight weeks. Stipends for shorter periods are pro-rated.
Applicants, preferably but not exclusively, from a V4 country, may be researchers, students after their second degree carrying out research, or artists, journalists, academics, or both.
Scholars at risk from war zones as well as refugees of conscience (scholars fleeing authoritarian regimes) are especially invited to apply.

Assessment
The Selection Committee will evaluate proposals on the strength of the professional quality and novelty of the research proposal, its relevance to the chosen topic and the involvement of the OSA holdings in the research. In the case of equal scores those from V4 countries have an advantage. The artists submitting proposals are kindly required to frame their application as research-based projects as well, carefully indicating the collections they will rely on. The artistic proposals will be assessed according to their merit, originality, timeliness as well as their feasibility (with regards to their reliance on available OSA collections). OSA can only offer conditions for the realization of artistic research, not for production.

Artists are expected to submit a portfolio, too. We recommend you refer to one of the topics in your application. Please also mention the specific collections you would like to consult.

CfA: Making Ukrainian scientists visible with their research
As part of the fundraising campaign for endangered scholars, the Ukraine Initiative of different members the University of Erfurt and the "Universitätsgesellschaft Erfurt" is offering to scholars from Ukraine the opportunity to deliver guest lectures. The aim is to provide visibility for our Ukrainian colleagues and their work.
The subject of the lecture can be ongoing research in the humanities and social sciences, as well as analyses of the origins and background of the current political and cultural situation in Ukraine. With this, we want to provide a platform for Ukrainian research and at the same time initiate scholarly exchange on the war of aggression on Ukraine and its consequences. To the degree it is possible, we want to enable the participants to have a continuing discussion in which their topics and theses can be further developed.
The offer is open to scholars on all career levels, and we encourage PhD students to consider the applying. The participants in the program can give remote lectures via video or podcast – also directly from Ukraine. The lecturers will receive an honorarium of € 250. Their lectures will be made generally accessible online as a video or podcast and should be 15-20 minutes in length. The presentations should be given in English or German, but if this is not possible, we will provide a translation from Russian or Ukrainian. Translations should ideally also be done by endangered scholars. In this case, the translators would be remunerated on the basis of a work contract. Assistance with the recording of the lectures can be provided if necessary, for example via remote recording using video platforms.

У рамках благодійної акції зі збору коштів на підтримку вчених, що знаходяться в небезпеці, ініціативна група допомоги Україні при університеті та університетському товаристві Ерфурта, оголошує конкурс коротких онлайн-доповідей. Метою акції є привернення уваги до роботи українських вчених, які продовжують свої дослідження в умовах війни. Ми запрошуємо науковців усіх вікових категорій та наукових ступенів, особливо аспірантів, підготувати дистанційно (насамперед з України) короткі онлайн-доповіді у форматі відео або аудіоподкасту. Темою доповідей можуть бути як поточні дослідження у галузі гуманітарних та соціальних наук, так і аналіз актуальної ситуації в Україні. Таким чином ми прагнемо створити майданчик для дискусії як про науку в Україні, так і про війну, її передумови та наслідки. Автори обраних на конкурсній основі виступів отримають винагороду в розмірі 250 євро. Відеоабо аудіозаписи доповідей будуть опубліковані. Тривалість доповідей повинна бути 15-20 хвилин. From the Middle Ages to the present, intercultural exchange has shaped knowledge and scholarship in Central Europe. While nationalism, practical and methodological, as well as memory practices created a clear-cut vision of German-Polish scholarly contacts, this volume proposes interconnectedness, entanglement and circulation as new modes of inquiry. Based on examples ranging from architectural knowledge to philosophy and from archaeology to physical chemistry, contributions to this volume seek for alternative ways to tell the stories of scholarly relations in the space shaped not only by multilinguality, but also by power inequalities, imperialism and nationalisms. In particular, they counter the widespread center-periphery dependence by concentrating on encounters and sites “in between” as privileged places of inquiry. Last but not least, they put to the test the prevailing categories of historical research of the space in question, highlighting the variety of identifications and ways they impacted scholarly communication.
Corresponding editor: Jan Surman is a historian of science and scholarship, focusing on Central and Eastern Europe in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Currently, he is working at the Masaryk Institute and Archives of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague on projects on the internationality and transnationality of Central European scientific knowledge in the 20th century.

Tematem sympozjum jest rola wizualizacji w szeroko ujmowanej nauce. A więc zarówno w prezentowaniu rezultatów, jak w samych praktykach badawczych; w wyjaśnianiu, modelowaniu, komunikowaniu, ale i w nauczaniu. Skąd akurat taki pomysł na najnowszą i (tymczasem) polskojęzyczną edycję naszego sympozjum? Dominacja wizualności w nauce oraz wzroku wśród ludzkich form percepcji to opinia i oklepana, i nieoczywista. Dzięki studiom nad nauką i techniką przyswoiliśmy sobie wizję „myślenia za pomocą rąk i oczu”. Kognitywistyka od początku eksploatuje poznanie wzrokowe jako obszar badań, ale i sporów teoretycznych, gdzie najłatwiej „unaocznić” własne racje, czy to w zakresie reprezentacji poznawczych, czy afordancji, czy – jak ostatnio – hipotezy mózgu jako maszyny predykcyjnej. Teoria układów dynamicznych i modelowanie matematyczne wydają się niezwykle efektywne w graficznym ujmowaniu badanych struktur i procesów. Zwraca też uwagę wielowymiarowy dialog sztuki z nauką. A jednocześnie można się zastanawiać, na ile wizualizacyjne procedury i konwencje mogą dezorientować i działać w nauce na zasadzie mylnych tropów (tzw. czerwonych śledzi).Jak to zwykle miało miejsce na naszych konferencjach, również i tym razem oczekujemy zgłoszeń z zakresu nauk społecznych, nauk poznawczych i filozofii, a ponadto otwieramy się na matematykę w różnorakich zastosowaniach, jak i na transdyscyplinarne projekty angażujące edukację czy sztukę.Ponieważ coraz większy nacisk kładziemy na doskonalenie badawczego i integrującego charakteru naszych wydarzeń, zależy nam na możliwie pełnym Waszym udziale w sympozjum. Dlatego oczekujemy rozbudowanych abstraktów, które zostaną wnikliwie ocenione, a później posłużą przygotowaniu się Uczestniczek i Uczestników do udziału w danej sesji. Stosunkowo dużo czasu przeznaczymy na dyskusje. A najbardziej faworyzowaną przez nas sesją będzie sesja posterowa. Chcemy zaprzeczyć opinii, że forma plakatu przydaje się głównie w prezentacji badań empirycznych – dlatego zachęcamy do tej formy wypowiedzi także matematyków, filozofki, socjologów czy przedstawicielki badań na styku różnych dyscyplin.
Proponujemy dwie formy wystąpień:
POSTER
Przedstawienie plakatu jest szczególnie oczekiwaną przez nas formą wystąpienia. Umożliwiamy tutaj dwa podejścia. (1) Wystąpienie posterowe z ww. zakresu tematycznego (wliczając też propozycje, które przedstawiliśmy poniżej przy referatach. (2) Wystąpienie posterowe jako praktyczna demonstracja zasady „obraz jest wart więcej niż tysiąc słów” w nauce, przy czym tematyka staje się już dowolna, jest pretekstem.Wychodzimy z założenia, że dobre wystąpienie posterowe – na które składa się przygotowanie zarówno plakatu, jak i elastycznego krótkiego referatu oraz otwartość na serię możliwych dyskusji – wymaga większego nakładu sił niż zwykły referat średniej jakości. Dlatego, sprzeciwiając się dyskryminowaniu posterów, informujemy, że w treści zaświadczeń z udziału w sympozjum oba rodzaje wystąpień zostaną potraktowane podobnie, bez rozróżniania form. Pod koniec marca i na początku kwietnia 1942 roku Institut für Deutsche Ostarbeit przeprowadził w Tarnowie badania antropologiczne mieszkających w nim Żydów. Objęły one 565 osób (dodatkowo 13 przedstawicieli inteligencji i żebraków dla porównania wyników), które potraktowano jako bezimienne numery potrzebne do uzasadnienia ideologicznych teorii. Chciano udowodnić, że Żydzi odróżniają się zarówno fizycznie, jak i duchowo od Niemców, oraz potwierdzić powszechnie formułowany wniosek, iż rozwiązanie „kwestii żydowskiej” będzie możliwe jedynie przez oddzielenie ich od reszty społeczeństwa. Nie czekając na wyniki, które nigdy nie zostały opracowane (poza wstępnymi opisami), 10 czerwca 1942 roku naziści rozpoczęli w Tarnowie eksterminację Żydów. Książka jest próbą wydobycia z anonimowości konkretnych osób, które były przedmiotem badań.
Leszek Hońdo, dr hab. – kierownik Zakładu Kultury Żydów w Instytucie Judaistyki Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego, przewodniczący Komisji Historii i Kultury Żydów Polskiej Akademii Umiejętności. Zajmuje się kulturą Żydów, cmentarzami żydowskimi i myślą żydowską. Historie Ústavu experimentální botaniky AV ČR Rostlinná biologie – od fyziologie či fytopatologie až po buněčnou a molekulární biologii – se v posledních desetiletích rychle rozvíjí. K jejímu pokroku výrazně přispěli také vědci a vědkyně z Ústavu experimentální botaniky AV ČR, v. v. i., který je již od roku 1962 významným českým centrem bádání v tomto oboru.
Kniha mapuje prostřednictvím svědectví pamětníků a studia archivních dokumentů dějiny tohoto pracoviště, každodenní život v něm i historii vybraných výzkumných témat, jež určovala jeho vědecké směřování. V publikaci najdete rovněž medailonky významných osobností spjatých s ústavem a vzpomínky na zahraniční stáže či mezinárodní konference před rokem 1989. Knihu doprovází více než 200 dobových fotografií.
