The anthology focuses on the history of the social sciences during the 19th and 20th centuries, and looks at three focal areas: idiomatic linguistic forms, praxeological specialization and structural closure. With a focus on the relationship between these three aspects, the contributions in this anthology systematically study the historical development and unique nature of the social sciences.

Seit Mitte der 1990er Jahre findet die Wissenschaftsgeschichte der Sozialwissenschaften eine wachsende Aufmerksamkeit. Der Sammelband leistet einen wichtigen Beitrag zu dieser Entwicklung, indem er drei Aspekte fokussiert: Sozialwissenschaftliche Idiome, Praktiken und Strukturen. Die Beiträge des Sammelbands gehen davon aus, dass idiomatische Sprachprägungen, praxeologische Spezialisierung und strukturelle Schließungen dazu beigetragen haben, dass für den Gegenstandsbereich des Sozialen ein als wissenschaftlich markiertes Sonderwissen hervorgebracht wurde. Trotzdem erlangten die Sozialwissenschaften für die Deutung von Gesellschaft nie jene hegemoniale Stellung, wie sie die Naturwissenschaften erreicht haben. Um so stärker sind sie in ihrem wissenschaftlichen Selbstverständnis von der gegenwärtigen Wissenschaftsskepsis betroffen. Mit Blick auf diesen Trend analysiert der Sammelband systematisch die historische Entwicklung und Eigenart der Sozialwissenschaften im 19. und 20.
