Digital Memory Storage. Hvedir Vovk’s Archive (1847-1918)

(from the Archive of the Archaeological Institute of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences)

We are pleased to present the results of the project "Digital Memory Storage. Hvedir Vovk’s Archive (1847-1918)" at https://vovk.archive.iananu.com/

We would like to thank the Volkskundemuseum Wien, Photoinstitut Bonartes (Vienna), ERSTE Stiftung (Vienna), and the inspiration behind the project, Martin Rohde, who came up with the idea and brought it to completion, gently pushing us to the deadline. Back in the first months of the war, Fabian Baumann introduced us, and since then we have been thinking about it, writing a project, approving it at the Academic Council of the Institute of Archaeology, getting approval, and finally implementing it. A lot has been done: most of this infinitely interesting fond has been digitized; photographs and negatives on glass have been transferred to new wonderful archival boxes and envelopes. There are interesting finds, about which we write articles and make presentations at conferences.

So, for now, we want to share with you the archive of this extraordinary academic scientist, archaeologist, ethnographer, anthropologist, and at the same time revolutionary and passionate personality Khvedir Vovk. We invite you to the site, which presents 10 categories:

About Khvedir Vovk:

- Biographic documents;

- Portraits and other photographs.

Scholarly materials:

- Archaeology;

- Ethnography;

- Anthropology.

Epistolary materials:

- Letters from Mykhajlo Hrushevsky;

- Letters from Mykola Bilyashivsky;

- Letters from the Mortillet family.

Negatives on glass collection:

- Traveling in Western Europe;

- Archeology. Mizyn archaeological site.

Daryna Romanenko, Halyna Stanytsina, Tamara Kutsaeva, Oleksandra Buzko worked selflessly on the project. With the creation of the site, we were traditionally helped by a friend of the Archive, Volodymyr Mysak, a programmer, archaeologist, and now a military man.

Thanks for the beautiful photo shoot by Nika Gavrysh, who kindly agreed to help us on a volunteer basis. Pay attention to the wonderful photographer! ✍🏼

More details about the project and all thanks - on the website: https://vovk.archive.iananu.com/pro-robotu-nad-proektom/

If we suddenly forgot to thank someone in the conditions of a mad marathon before the deadline - we are very sorry. Remind yourself, we will add. 😊
