Slađana Dragišić Labaš, Samoubistvo – različiti diskursi [Suicide: Various Discourses], Belgrade 2019.

This study considers the phenomenon of suicide from the perspectives of various discourses – sociological, psychological, psychiatric and philosophical. Epidemiological data on suicide, as well as research findings on significant risk and protective factors (regarding society, environment, family and personality types) are presented. We examine the sociological theories about the possible causes of suicide and important sociological variables, such as demographic and socioeconomic factors, and the risks of suicidal behavior in minority and vulnerable groups. These include: members of ethnic minorities and immigrants, people with special needs, soldiers and war veterans, LGBT(TIQ) population, prisoners and detainees, victimized people, elderly people, children and adolescents (through association with bullying at school) and persons suffering from severe somatic – physical illness. The question of suicide is then viewed through the lenses of psychological theories, psychiatric explanations and philosophical understandings of the meaning of life and death. The study concludes with a section on suicide prevention and possible national programs and specific strategies that are applied in particular social contexts and are directed towards vulnerable populations, including a recommendation for responsible reporting in the media.

Mina Petrović and Milena Toković, Gradovi u ogledalu: između identiteta i brend imidža [Cities in the Looking-Glass: Between Identity and Brand Image], Belgrade 2018.

City branding is an increasingly prominent tendency and strategy of urban policies, partly arising as a response to the restructuring of the global economy and changing principles of the spatial division of labor that made themselves felt at the end of 20th century. The successfullness of cities becomes largely determined by their capacities to promote their identity in innovative ways, and this precisely is the issue lying at the heart of this study. Starting from the premises of the neoendogenous development paradigm and the concept of territorial capital, the authors use a wealth of empirical evidence to focus on the process of branding in the cases of eight medium-sized towns in Serbia, selecting the factors which particularly enhance their brand image.

The monograph covers the process of Homo Sovieticus identity construction in Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic in 1953–1991 as an important part of the Communist experiment. Numerous archive entries, memoirs and interviews have been processed to reveal the role of education, mass media and pop-culture in the Communism builder’s axiology instilment. The book provides a detailed analysis of multiple tactics the Ukrainian society (most notably, young adults) had implemented to resist cultural and ideological unitarization. A wide range of actual cases has been addressed to demonstrate the inner ambivalence and immanent inconsistency of the Soviet set of values, as well as to highlight the persistence of the Soviet man’s Weltanschauung even after Ukrainian independence had been declared.“

Scholarship: “Johann-Lorenz-Bausch Fellowship” 2020 (Deadline 31 January 2020)

The Leopoldina Akademie Freundeskreis e.V. announces the “Johann-Lorenz-Bausch Fellowship” for 2020. Johann Lorenz Bausch (1605-1665) founded the Academia naturae curiosorum, the Leopoldina, on 1 January 1652 in Schweinfurt together with four other physicians. This makes it the oldest continuously existing academy of medicine and the natural sciences in the world. The Leopoldina was appointed as the German National Academy of Sciences on 14 July 2008. It addresses key issues of particular significance for the future of society from a scientific perspective and independently of economic or political interests, shares its findings with policymakers and the public, and puts these issues up for discussion on a national and international level. In addition, it takes on the classic tasks of an academy by carrying out research, for example in the field of the history of science, and promoting young scientists and researchers.
Target group and possible topics
The fellowship is aimed at young scientists and researchers who work academically in the field of the history of science in a narrower or wider sense. This announcement is not restricted to specific disciplines or methodical approaches. The place of work for the duration of the fellowship is the Leopoldina Centre for Science Studies in Halle (Saale). During your research you have access to the extensive collection at the Leopoldina library and archives as well as the local and regional libraries and archives. You can find a list of the research subjects currently being pursued at the Leopoldina Centre of Studies here: https://www.leopoldina.org/ueber-uns/zentrum-fuer-wissenschaftsforschung/
Other subjects that deal with history of science, the academy’s history, its publications and its members’ works and contributions are also possible though.
Services and funding
The scholarship grant is €5,000 maximum. The grant can be awarded for a period of up to four months and amounts to €1,250 a month. The Leopoldina Centre of Studies assists fellows logistically. It provides the necessary working environment for the fellows’ work and facilitates exchange with other ongoing research projects and Leopoldina members.

Call for Papers: Maps and Colours, Hamburg, 05.11.2020 - 06.11.2020, Deadline 01.03.2020

The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is funding the three-year joint research project "Coloured Maps" (2018–2021), involving the Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures and the Mineralogical Museum, Center of Natural History (CeNak) (both University of Hamburg), the Hanseatic Business Archive Foundation and the Museum am Rothenbaum in Hamburg. Applying methods from the material sciences and with art- and cultural-historical approaches, the research group analyses hand-drawn and hand-coloured maps from European and East Asian areas, produced between the 15th and 20th century. Our research focuses on the function of colour, technical aspects and colour production, but also on the historico-cultural classification of selected maps.
In the framework of our research project, we are organizing a workshop with a cross-cultural approach to discuss the material nature and meaning of colours on maps.
We want to discuss maps and colours, methods and discourses, colourants and analytical approaches. We will focus on European and Asian maps between 15th and 19th century but are also interested in debating maps from other areas.
In correspondence with the multidisciplinary approach of our research project, we invite contributions from various fields of research such as the history of cartography, arts, technology, science as well as scholars from restauration, cultural, visual and material studies. Work in progress contributions are as welcome as finalized results.

Topics might include, among others
- colour codes and colour systems on maps
- early colour prints
- map colouring technologies
- colour and materiality of maps
- materials for colouring maps: pigments and dyes
- commercial interest in colouring maps
- local colours on local maps
