About the Program
The Lysiak-Rudnytsky Ukrainian Studies Programme is an annual program of the Ukrainian Institute's Academiс Sector. It welcomes project proposals from educational institutions, think tanks, and research centers that focus on the history and culture of Ukraine.
The Lysiak-Rudnytskyi Ukrainian Studies Programme is designed to increase the visibility of Ukraine in educational, research, and cultural centers in Europe and North America.
The goal of the Lysiak-Rudnytsky Programme is to:
-Support the projects in Ukrainian Studies
-Strengthen Ukrainian perspectives in public discourse;
-Promote Ukraine and its cultural heritage.
The development of Ukrainian studies is a necessary pre-condition for Ukraine to step out of Russia's shadow and strengthen its agency in the international public arena. Additionally, the study of Ukraine brings new perspectives to a wide range of research topics in the history and culture of Central and Eastern Europe. The country's reputation depends, inter alia, on the level of its representation in the academic sphere. This includes the quality and quantity of research papers, translations, and a number of academic courses at foreign universities.
Highlighting Ukrainian topics outside of Ukraine is one of the goals of the Academic Sector of the Ukrainian Institute.
THE PROGRAM IS NAMED AFTER THE AMERICAN AND CANADIAN HISTORIAN OF UKRAINIAN ORIGIN IVAN LYSIAK-RUDNYTSKY (1919-1984). PROFESSOR LYSYAK-RUDNYTSKY HAS MADE SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF UKRAINIAN STUDIES ABROAD. SINCE THE 1950, HE ARGUED AGAINST THE RUSSIAN-CENTRIC APPROACH TO THE HISTORY OF EASTERN EUROPE, WHICH WAS PREVALENT IN NORTH AMERICA. EMPHASIZING THE MULTIETHNICITY OF THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE AND THE SOVIET UNION, THE HIGHLIGHTED UKRAINIAN TOPICS AND UKRAINIAN PERSPECTIVES REGARDING EVENTS OF THE PAST. HIS NUMEROUS ESSAYS ON UKRAINIAN POLITICAL AND INTELLECTUAL HISTORY HAVE HAD A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON THE FORMATION OF MODERN UKRAINIAN HISTORIOGRAPHY.
Open Call 2020
In 2020, the Ukrainian Institute announces the first open call of the programme.
We plan to announce open call annually.
The thematic focus of the Program in 2020:
Historical figures from Ukraine and their legacy.
Monumental heritage and art of the Soviet period in Ukraine;
Crimes of totalitarian regimes in Ukraine in culture and memory;
Ukraine in the early 20th century;
Ukrainian literature in exile;
Ukrainian culture (within the period of the second half of the 20th century to the beginning of the 21st century);
Ukrainian architecture and urban planning (within the period of the 20th century to the beginning of the 21st century).
Possible topics of the projects are not limited to this list. Applicants may propose projects on other topics but they will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Eligible formats of the projects:
Translations of non-fiction texts from Ukrainian into foreign languages;
Publications of original texts on Ukrainian issues in foreign languages;
Public discussions and lectures (including video lectures and online conferences);
Conferences and round tables;
Creation of online content (publications, videos, graphics) on academic and educational resources;
Creation and/or promotion of an Internet platform for networking and information exchange in academia;
Publishing reviews of publications on Ukrainian issues.
Eligibility
Institutions that operate in cultural, educational, or scientific sphere outside of Ukraine (universities, think tanks, research centers, NGOs and others) are eligible to apply.
One applicant has the right to submit no more than two applications.
Ukrainian institutions (residents of Ukraine) cannot apply for the Programme.
The Ukrainian Institute welcomes the cooperation between Ukrainian institutions and foreign ones, but only the foreign institution can apply for the Programme.
How to Apply
To apply for the Programme please send your application with the required documents to academic@ui.org.ua with the subject line 'Project_Name_Proposal_Lysiak-Rudnytsky_Programme'.
The submission must be submitted by 12 July 2020 (23:59 GMT+3).
All materials must be submitted in English or Ukrainian.
Please attach the following materials to the application:
→ Application form (form via link).
→ Charter (extract from the Charter or another document confirming the authority of the signatory of the applicant and their right to sign contracts) and registration documents of the applicant (scanned copies in PDF format).
→ Project proposal.
→ Examples of similar projects.
→ Letter of confirmation that an applicant possesses technical means and/or specialists for the implementation of the project (scanned copy of the signed letter in PDF format).
→ Detailed budget of the project (form)
→ Signed form confirming that proposed project does not benefit Russian citizens or institutions, and confirming that among founders and members of the applicant institution there no persons who are subject to economic and other restrictive measures (sanctions) due to Ukrainian legislation. The projects must be implemented by November 30, 2020.
The budget of the project is a maximum of 10 000 EUR (or 300 000 UAH, including all mandatory taxes and fees that must be paid per the current legislation of Ukraine and international law).
Projects of a highly relevance that exceed the budget estimate can be considered by the Ukrainian Institute on a case-by-case basis.
The selected projects will be financed and supported from the state budget of Ukraine following the relevant procurement procedures by concluding a bilingual (Ukrainian and English) service agreement between the Ukrainian Institute and the selected applicant in accordance with the Ukrainian legislation in the form provided by the Ukrainian Institute.
Payment for the project will be made after the services are provided. The pre-payment may be considered on exclusive basis and will be discussed with the winner stemming from a particular projects' needs.
